Snowflake by Snowflake

Tavi
To our snowflake,
may every winter be full of cocoa mustaches,
crooked snowmen and too much tape.
We love you more than all the twinkle lights.
Love, Mom and Grandma

Snow fell outside, soft and slow. Tavi pressed her nose to the cold window glass. Fat snowflakes drifted down like tiny feathers. "Snowflake by snowflake, the best things grow," Mom whispered, wrapping her in a warm blanket with cocoa.

In the kitchen, flour puffed into the air like tiny clouds. Tavi pressed star cookie cutters into soft dough. Red and green sprinkles sparkled like jewels. "Grandma is coming soon," Mom said, "by the twinkling tree."

Outside, Tavi packed snow into round, bumpy balls. She gave her snowman a crooked carrot nose and a lopsided grin. "You'll guard Grandma's present, Snowball," she declared proudly. Snowball just leaned, silent and steady, in the softly falling snow.

Tavi thought hard. "I know!" she said. "I'll give Grandma my shiny snowman kit — the best present ever!" Her eyes sparkled brighter than the tree lights. But wrapping it would be trickier than she thought.

Tape stuck to Tavi's fingers. It stuck to her nose! It even stuck to Mom's sleeve, making them both giggle. The paper crumpled into lumpy bumps, no matter how carefully Tavi smoothed it down.

Tavi stared at the lumpy box. "It looks too messy for Grandma," she whispered, chin wobbling. Outside the window, Snowball leaned a little further, as if nodding along with her worry.

Tavi drew a card instead — a wobbly crayon tree and a crooked red heart. "It looks too silly," she sighed, hiding it under her sleeve. "Snowflake by snowflake," she murmured, "the best things grow... but does that work for cards too?"
7 / 16
That night, Tavi looked at both gifts side by side — the tape-tangled box, and the tiny crooked card. Which one should she give Grandma? Her tummy fluttered like a trapped snowflake.
8 / 16
Should she hide the silly card and give just the messy box with a big store bow? Or give only the card, and risk it not feeling like enough? Tavi's heart pounded like soft little snowflake taps.
9 / 16
Finally, Tavi made her choice. She taped the crooked little card right onto the lumpy box's lid. "Both," she whispered. "I'll give her both, tangles and all."
10 / 16
Ding-dong! Grandma arrived, cheeks pink from the cold, her paisley handbag swinging. She settled into the cozy chair beside the glowing tree, twinkle lights dancing in her glasses.
11 / 16
Heart pounding like a drum, Tavi held out the tape-covered box, the crooked card taped crookedly to its lid. Grandma's eyes widened — then she burst into delighted laughter, hugging the card to her chest before even opening the box!
12 / 16
"This," Grandma declared, "is the best-wrapped nothing-can-get-out present I have EVER received!" She chuckled at the tangled tape, tracing it with one finger. "I can tell exactly how much love went into this."
13 / 16
Grandma finally peeled back the tangled tape, layer by layer, laughing the whole time. Inside was the shiny snowman kit, but she barely glanced at it — she was too busy admiring Tavi's crooked little heart.
14 / 16
Tavi snuggled beside Grandma under the twinkling lights. Her heart felt warm and sparkly, just like the tree. "Giving feels even better than I thought," she whispered happily.
15 / 16
"Snowflake by snowflake," Tavi smiled, "the best things grow." She finally understood — not from being perfect, but from being made with love. Outside, Snowball leaned happily in the moonlit snow, guarding nothing, and everything.
